Thank you so much for the wonderful comments, text messages, and emails. I landed safely in Saipan and have been spending the past few days getting acclimated to my new life here.
With this view from my driveway, it has been pretty easy so far
I haven’t been very active online over the past few weeks because I tried to spend more time offline with friends and family. I spent a lot of evenings walking, yoga-ing, watching movies, cooking, and just plain chilling the fuck out. The past few months were a little tumultuous and this decompression was very welcome.
My time in Saipan so far has been amazing. The colors and scenery are stunning and everyone that I have met so far have been warm and welcoming. Plus, I have a CAT! He’s still warming up to me, but I’ll have lots of photos soon
Fitness-wise, I have been doing a little running, quite a bit of swimming, and tons of hiking and walking. As I get more settled, I anticipate some yoga on my front porch and possibly CrossFit in my near future.
Food-wise, I have been eating EVERYTHING. Coconut and avocados are insanely cheap, so those are now breakfast staples. I recently tried a savory, slightly sweet dish that had a thick coconut sauce with little banana dumplings in it. Filipino, Japanese, and Korean restaurants are very common here.
On Monday, I met Chris for his lunch break and we went to a nearby resort to check out their buffet. It was a really fun fusion of different cuisines – fried shrimp, Korean kimchi, sausage meatballs, marinated artichokes, chop suey, and more.
I have been learning a bit about which foods are grown locally here. We have coconuts, star fruit, and papayas in our yard, with mangoes just a short hike away. Avocados, taro, bananas, mangoes, and kabocha squash are also grown on the island, as well as some foods that I had never heard of before, like breadfruit.
I hope all of you have also been well. I can’t wait to catch up with everyone
Any big news to share since I’ve been gone?
