Hello!
This is a photo from out trip to Kentucky last fall. We’re planning another visit next month and looking at our old photos has me so excited
Workouts
Tues – Back & biceps.
Wed – 30 minutes of light elliptical intervals.
Thurs – 30 minutes of light elliptical intervals.
Eats
1) Roasted acorn squash, rubbed with coconut oil, and topped with a smear of PB. The best antidote for surviving winter.

2) It turns out we had some more avocado hiding in the fridge! Don’t you love when you find a surprise avocado? It’s like having a surprise birthday party. Also, roasted brussels sprouts and soy sauce chicken.

I may have already mentioned this, but our Trader Joe’s recently started carrying brussels sprouts in their freezer section and it’s so wonderful. We like to panfry them in a cast iron skillet with a little oil, until the outside gets a little crispy.
3) We started liquidating our coupon cache (it’s the worst when those suckers expire behind your back!) and found these wonderful treasures.

I think Starbucks is pretty overpriced and don’t really drink it much, so this was a fun adventure. It turns out that the “Blonde Roast” is hot water poured over the grounds to order. I guess it is supposed to be less aggressive and, thus, smoother than machine brewing.
My husband happens to know tons about different ways of brewing coffee and if you guys are interested, I could try to strong-arm him into doing a guest post.
Food Scale
I recently purchased this food scale off Amazon. I wanted some help with portioning and I was so damn tired of washing a million measuring cups each time I prepared a meal. Also, it turned out that I had no idea what a serving of chicken looks like.

I have used it for about a month now and wanted to share.
+ It’s reasonably priced. Also, if you order off Amazon, the $25 price tag is enough to snag free shipping.
+ It’s simple. It tares and changes units; I don’t need anything else.
+ It has four different units (gram, ounce, pound, kilogram). It’s nice to just plop 4 ounces of chicken and 28 grams of peanut butter straight into my bowl, instead of measuring 2 tablespoons and badly estimating the chicken.
- Something made the ink rub off the buttons. Fortunately, there are only two, so I still know which is which.
- The shiny plate looks dirty almost immediately.
- I haven’t encountered this myself, but other reviewers mentioned food gunking up the buttons.
Do you use a food scale?

I use my food scale pretty much on a regular basis – when I make bread, portion out meat, etc. When I stop using it, suddenly my 4 oz. portions of chicken turn into 8 ounces before I know it!
Using a scale really does make everything so much easier – and much more accurate. My “eyeballs” are just no good
I just used my foodscale for the first time today! Travis’ mom gave us one, and I used it to portion out chicken…I never know how much is an ounce!
I had no idea, either! It turns out that I had been underestimating for a looong time.
ummmmm so are you saying you don’t like the blonde roast? I gave up coffee/caffeine a few months ago and I found out I just can’t drink the dark stuff anymore, but I really do like the blonde roast… it is just right when I drink coffee really infrequently now. But, I would be interested in your coffee post!
No, I actually really enjoyed the blonde roast! I don’t enjoy darker brews, unless there’s a lot of cream/sugar stirred in.
I have never used a food scale before, but I have heard they are really great for baking because you can truly measure flour and stuff!
Yes, Alton Brown (from the Good Eats tv show) says that air is a huge factor when measuring flour and can change how things turn out!
I am obsessed with coupons ! One thing I have learned is to use the coupon that week or else you get that pile of expired wonders. I do use a food scale because I think its important to at least have an idea of your macros, I don’t obsess and write or keep track of every bit of food I eat but when I meal prep I make such a huge load of food having that scale helps! Enjoy the roast
Love and shine courtstar
That coupon rule is really good, especially if you end up with multiples of the same one – I end up running to the grocery store to buy 3 gallons of milk before the coupons expire
mm squash is totally a winter survival necessity. And I love starbucks, but it’s definitely too pricey to go all the time. My dad has a membership or something (he has to drive to a ton of different hospitals for his work so he makes plenty o’ starbucks runs) and sometimes he gives me the coupons and gift cards he gets in the mail. it’s like the best thing ever when he does.
I love coupons! It really is the best thing ever.
I never liked the “Blonde Roast” at Starbucks. It was way too weak for my taste buds
I love the Kentucky picture!
I actually liked the Blond Roast; I’m not a big fan of darker brews. Maybe my coffee tastebuds are still developing
I’m such a java junky, so I would not be opposed to reading a post all about coffee.
Chris makes the best coffee! I’m gonna bully him into posting
Hi Alex!
Thanks for stopping by! That is so cool, that you live in Pittsburgh & you’re adopted from Korea! My future brother in law & his sis are adopted from Korea too. Small world!
Oh my, you first picture makes me want spring so bad. Hope you have a great weekend, stay warm!
Hey, Beth! I know what you mean – I’m ready for this cold weather to GO AWAY!
Having a food scale around is such a good idea. I hate having to constantly use measuring cups, too. Also…please share. Where do you buy your avocados around here? I LOVE them so much…but every time I buy one, it’s either brown or as hard as a rock/won’t get soft. Maybe I’m just horrible at picking good one….?
We were buying them like crazy when Giant Eagle had them on sale for $1 and, yeah, they were always rock hard. I let them sit on the counter for awhile to ripen before eating (usually 4-5 days!).
Your Kentucky trip sounds wonderful! I’d lo e to read a post by your husband on coffee. I love avocado and Brussel sprouts.
I’m gonna bully him into guest posting
That food scale is a good deal. I may have to order one off Amazon…
I thought it was a pretty good deal! I’m satisfied with the purchase.
everyone keeps doing this squash and pb combo.. so interesting
It’s delicious! I love the sweet squash with the salty PB.
Actually, I love anything with PB
I dont currently use a food scale but i have been considering it for some things!
I would definitely recommend it! I don’t have nearly as many dirty dishes anymore
I do have a food scale, and my favorite thing about it is not having to dirty as many measuring spoons/cups!!! Love that. My husband is the coffee snob . . . he has some fancy schmancy hand-pull espresso machine that I don’t even know how to use. But that also means that he makes my morning Americano for me every day.
That espresso machine sounds really nifty! Is it like the ones I see in coffee shops? Good Eats did a really fun episode about espresso that’s available on YouTube. Maybe Bob will enjoy it

This is the first I’ve heard of combining squash and peanut butter but I like the sound of it!
I love the combo of salty and sweet and crunchy and creamy! nom!
When/where in KY are you going to be? You’ll be near my neck of the woods
Food scales! I got a super-basic one at walmart. Yup, it measures, changes measurements–that’s all I need! I’m such a bad judge of anything related to size/weight/distance…I know I should be able to “judge” by now, but I’m always still way off. Plus, interesting to see how “off” labeled serving sizes are. I always want to write to the companies and complain. Especially vega protein powder! They call a “scoop” a serving size, but also label a serving size as 1.2oz. Guess what the scoop is? Consistently 0.8oz…That’s 3/4 of an actual serving. These things bother me.
Definitely get the boy to do a coffee post! I looove coffee and find all the variations/options fascination AND baffling.
We’ll be in Elizabethtown, which is about 2 hours north of Nashville. If my hankerin’ for Mexican food gets outta control, you might just find us on your front porch!
I never thought to check my protein powder! I always took it for granted that a scoop is a scoop is a serving. Sneaky! Especially for high-cost products like supplements.
You’re more than welcome to show up! That would be fabulous! And a lot of scoops are off! Optimum Nutrition casein is way off too. Only discovered because I go a little crazy and weigh everything–not for health purposes, just because I have way too much fun with it, haha. I shouldn’t be allowed to have kitchen gadgets…
I got a really cheap one at Aldi, I think for $10 or so. It comes with a bowl that you can put things in too, which I think is helpful. I bought it mostly for baking – weighing ingredients is supposed to be much more accurate than measuring.
God, Aldi’s is the best, isn’t it? I have heard that weighing things like flour is much more accurate, because of air. That’s one reason your treats always look so delicious!
