Hello!
Workouts
Tues – Thurs…nothing! I’m such a bitchy little baby when it comes to the cold weather, refusing to go outside any more than necessary. Today, I will do it!
Eats
Have you ever eaten celeriac (celery root) before? Here is a little disembodied hand to show you how weird and knobby it looks:

Momo’s mom gave us her CSA share, so it wouldn’t be wasted while she was out of town and it included celeriac, beets, and turnips.
We chopped, boiled, and mashed the celeriac and turnips. The celeriac was pretty interesting – totally tasted like celery, but had the texture of a potato. This mash went under everything for a few days.
1) Mash + chicken + fajita veggies.

2) Mash + veggie sausage + broccoli.

3) Probably some other stuff too (like fried eggs, yum!), but it was, shockingly, even more hideous than the photos above and not worth sharing.
If you prefer your food to be more like food and less like mash, then you should check out Michelle’s recipe for celeriac home fries.
Sleeping
I’ve found that people in grad school love to talk about sleeping. I have been a firm believer of the regularly-held sleep guidelines – go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, exercise, don’t eat junk, avoid caffeine after a certain time, don’t stress, blah blah blah.
I follow this rules as best I can, but I still find myself getting really effing tired around 7 or 8pm, when I don’t go to bed until 11. I’m thinking about keeping some sort of journal to try and identify what the problem is…
How much do you sleep each night?
Hmm, I don’t know if I’d be a huge fan of celeriac, since I don’t really care for the taste of celery, and my main complaint with potatoes is their lack of texture. But then again, I’d be up for it if it was free! Yeah, CSAs
I slept TWELVE hours last night. It was pretty ridiculous, but apparently my brain/body needed it. 7-8 is the norm.
Haha! Yes, I think perhaps celeriac is not for you
7-8 is my norm, too…but I’m thinking I may need more. I LOVE those 12 hour days!

Your post is the first I’ve heard of celeriac. Sounds interesting so I’ll have to look for it during my next trip to the grocery store!
It was really fun! My brain kept saying, “Celery? Potato? Celery? Potato?”
I can’t believe how much I sleep these days. Definitely pushing 8. I was so used to 5-6 for many years!
I spent most of my undergrad coasting on 5-6 hours, but now I can’t function at all on less than 8!
I’m a biiiig babay about the cold, too! When it comes to running in the winter, I usually just hit up the treadmill. After I have a lot of HOT coffee to get me going, haha.
I have always wanted to try celeriac!
Ah, sleep. I am a big believer in the regular sleep pattern belief! I usually lay in bed around 9pm (dork status) and wake up at 4:45…so I guess I get around 8 hours!
Celeriac was so interesting! It was a fun celery/potato mishmash.
If I woke up at 4:45, then I would definitely be in bed around 9pm, too. I struggle to wake up at 7!
Since I haven’t been working, I have been sleeping about 9 hours which would ultimately be ideal for me (I need my sleep!). I normally get between 7 and 8 though!
I normally get between 7 and 8, too…but I’d love to be one of those people who can function on only 6-7!
“Bitchy little baby” describes me to a T when it comes to dealing with this weather, too. Just can’t hack it.
I love to sleep. It’s definitely somewhat of a vice of mine becauese given the chance, I could probably stay in bed all day and sleep the day away. I have to get at least 7-8 hrs of sleep each night or else I can’t function. I can’t relate to people who function on little to no sleep!
Pittsburgh’s weather is so dreary! It makes me want to stay in bed all day.
I’m the same way about sleep! I literally start dropping things/running into things if I don’t get enough sleep. One other commenter said that she often doesn’t sleep for a day (or two!) before her exams. She’s a lot tougher than I am!
what an interesting vegetable!!
omg and i totally feel you about school being very tiring. i remember when i first had anatomy lab during first year med school- even if lab was only like 2 hours maybe, we would all feel completely EXHAUSTED after and had to take naps…!! it was so annoying because then i would fall behind on studying as a result but then i felt like i really needed it. it did get better over time.
for me, i would love to get 9 hours of sleep everyday. that’s my natural amount of sleep my body needs to be completely happy for the day. unfortunately i usually just get 7 everyday with the help of coffee, and try to maybe get 9 on the weekends- doesn’t always happen though….it’s mostly just 7, maybe 5-6 for the 1.5 wks prior to an exam, then 0-3 hrs for the 2 days before the exam… then every 3 weeks after an exam, i sleep for like 12-13 hours on the weekend for 2 days before going back to the sleepless cycle again T_T
“it did get better over time.”
I keep wondering if I can train my body to function on progressively less sleep (within reason, of course). Like, I get 8 hours now, but maybe if I get 7.5 hours, my body would eventually adjust to it. Then I could start doing only 7 hours and maybe my body would get used to that, too. Wishful thinking, perhaps
I could never handle med school! It amazes me how hard you guys work.
I used to sleep about 5-6 hours before. However, now that I’ve started running my body has been demanding more sleep so the number has went up to 7 hours. It’s really hard because most of the kids in my program live off of 3-5 hours a night… It’s crazy!
3-5 hours! 5-6 hours! You academics amaze me. I basically turn into a bleary-eyed puddle if I get less than 7 hours.
I have never tried celery root, sounds interesting!!
I need 8 hours -10 hours. I used to never sleep much in my early 20s because I hate going to bed early. I woukd average 5-6 hours. Now I wish I could get more sleep, sometimes 8 doesn’t feel like enough.
The celery root was really interesting because the flavors kept saying, “celery! celery!” but the texture kept saying, “potato! potato!”
When I was an undergrad, I definitely had more nights of 5-6 hours than not. I used weekends to catch up, which meant that I was perpetually exhausted. I agree – 8 often doesn’t feel like enough!
If I could, I would sleep 8 1/2 hours per night. I usually get around 7 1/2 on weekdays, 8 on weekends. ZZZZzzzzz
I keep trying to “train” my body to function on 7.5 hours, but it keeps saying, “hell, naw!” I let myself get a little extra on the weekends, too
Oh, I hear ya on the cold weather. That jog to and from the gym is killer these days (it’s only a block and a half, but I’m a baby). Isn’t celery root fun? I need to get my hands on that again–it’s a nice change. Thanks for the shout out.
For me, going to the gym is hard enough on some days (most days), so the extra hurdle of cold weather really makes me drag my feet :-/
I love shouting out to your simple, gorgeous recipes!
I had celeriac once before – I think I roasted it!? But I remember it tasting like a light potato. And I usually get 8 or 9 hours of sleep a night, (mostly because I haven’t worked for a few months) but once I start working and becoming a lot busier, I will probably go back to 7.5 or 8 hours! I’d say try and go to sleep when you get tired, even if it’s 8:30! See if that makes a difference?
Roasted celeriac would be really good! It does taste like a potato/celery hybrid.
Maybe if I started going to bed when I’m tired, like you suggest, then I could catch up on all the times that I didn’t sleep enough. Any idea that suggests I go to bed is a good one
I saw this celeriac on chopped the other night!! I think it sounds awesome. I sleep enough now, but when I was working I never got enough. Probably because I had to be at work at 4am..eww.
I LOVE Chopped! I just wish the contestants had a little bit more time because their dishes are always so interesting.
4am! The earliest that I ever had to be at work was 5:45 and that was really, really tough. It’s so strange to be out and about when the city is dark and quiet.
I love my food to be a giant mash of stuff… and I’ve been so tired all the time lately
I think maybe it’s the weather? Pittsburgh’s sky has been alternating between black (night time) and light gray (day time), bleh!
same with Chicago, so that’s probably totally it!
that is so smart about your sleep schedule, I know people are all like bragging about their all nighters. oh heck no schedule it is
No way! My body literally starts to melt late at night.
I’m all about the regular sleep patterns. I don’t have caffeine after 2 p.m., I turn off electronics about 30 minutes before going to bed, and I have a bedtime “routine” that signals it’s time to sleep (aka I put on Chapstick and hand lotion, lol). Most nights, I get about eight hours of sleep, but I wouldn’t be opposed to getting more.
I also have a little bedtime routine of lipbalm and hand loation – 8 hours is a long time!
I don’t follow the “electronics before bed” rule, but that’s a really good idea and one that I should definitely start incorporating. I fell asleep a lot more quickly before I had a smartphone :-/
